Notes for BONTJE BAUWES WESTERHUIS:
Death record of her husband Juergen Henrich Schnuck: SLC Film# 235273.

Children of JUERGEN SCHNUCK and BONTJE WESTERHUIS are:
i. EVERT SCHNUCK, b. November 15, 1823, Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Notes for EVERT SCHNUCK:
It seems that Evert Schuck died unmarried, because only the marriage
of Bouwe Schnuck is registered in Westerbroek.

ii. BOUWE SCHNUCK, b. December 03, 1825, Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands; d. June 19, 1827, Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands.
4. iii. BOUWE SCHNUCK, b. November 09, 1830.
iv. GEESSIEN SCHNUCK, b. July 29, 1834, Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands.
v. AALTJE SCHNUCK, b. November 05, 1838, Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Generation No. 4

4. BOUWE SCHNUCK (JUERGEN HENRICH , JOHANN EBERHARD , JUERGEN ) was born November 09, 1830. He married TRIJNTJE VOS June 02, 1855 in Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands. She was born March 24, 1830 in Foxhol, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Notes for TRIJNTJE VOS:
Trijntje Vos was born an "illegitimate" child as daughter of Annechien
Hermannus Helder, who married Klaas Klaasz. Vos. At that marriage Trijntje Vos
is legitimitized as their daughter.
As a personal note I must add that she was, very likely, the natural daughter
of Hermannus Helder -- it was not uncommon for a woman to get pregnant before
marriage (just to see whether of not she could bear children).

Children of BOUWE SCHNUCK and TRIJNTJE VOS are:
5. i. HINDRIK SCHNUCK, b. March 22, 1855, Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands.
ii. BONTJE SNUCK, b. October 25, 1856, Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Notes for BONTJE SNUCK:
She chose the spelling Snuck, rather than the German spelling Schnuck.

6. iii. KLAAS SNUK, b. June 22, 1859, Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands.
iv. EVERT SNUK, b. April 25, 1865, Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands; d. Bef. November 1871.

Notes for EVERT SNUK:
The spelling of the name is different, again, from that of his siblings --
whether that was done on purpose or not, I don't know. Snuk, Schnuck and Snuck
are all pronounced the same in Dutch.
I assume that Evert died before 10 Nov 1871, because then another Evert is born
and that is usually a sing that the first one had passed on.

v. ANNEGIE SCHNUCK, b. May 01, 1870, Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands; d. August 17, 1877.
vi. EVERT SCHNUCK, b. April 25, 1865, Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands; d. Bef. November 10, 1871.

Generation No. 5

5. HINDRIK SCHNUCK (BOUWE, JUERGEN HENRICH, JOHANN EBERHARD, JUERGEN) was born March 22, 1855 in Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands. He married DERKJE KUIPER.

Notes for HINDRIK SCHNUCK:
Hindrik Schnuck is born before the marriage of his parents (not that uncommon
in those part of the world in those days). He is legitimitized at the marriage
of his parents. on 2 June 1855. According to the records they both are his
natural parents.

Children of HINDRIK SCHNUCK and DERKJE KUIPER are:
i. SIMON6 SCHNUCK, b. September 17, 1879, Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands; m. AALTJE IDEMA.
ii. AALTJE SCHNUCK, b. March 03, 1887, Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands; m. JACOB WOLTHUIS.

Notes for JACOB WOLTHUIS:
Jacob Wolthuis and Aaltje Schnuck owned a pub in Westerbroek. I did visit
the place once in a while (not for drinking purposes).

7. KLAAS SCHNUCK (HINDRIK , BOUWE , JUERGEN HENRICH , JOHANN EBERHARD , JUERGEN) was born February 18, 1889 in Westerbroek, Hoogezand, Groningen, The Netherlands, and died June 26, 1946 in Westerbroek, Hoogezand, The Netherlands. He married LOUISA ELIZABETH HAAKMAN, daughter of HENDRICK HAAKMAN and JANTINA VAN DEN BERG. She was born April 26, 1888 in Hoogezand, The Netherlands, and died July 20, 1967 in Westerbroek, Groningen, the Netherlands.

Notes for KLAAS SCHNUCK:

This is my grandfather on my mother's side. A very nice and gentle
man, who died when he was still rather young at the age of 57.
He died of a "bleeding ulcer" probably made worse by his smoking and
drinking.
Professionally he was a small time contractor/carpenter -- quite a craftsman as I have been told.
When he died my mother and I were visiting him and my grandmother.
I remember that I spent many hours with him when I was little; and I did, especially, enjoy his garden in the back of the house (where I liked to eat the berries that grew there). Another thing I remember is that he made a beautiful wooden sled for me which I used during the winter months. Later, my father gave it away to my cousin Koos (Hilko) Harkema for a reason that up to this time is not known to me.
Grandfather Klaas Schnuck died on a sunny afternoon on July 26, 1946. I was
there. He went to the bathroom, came back, went to bed and died without saying anything. He was buried in the cemetery in Westerbroek, behind the white church there.

Notes for EVERT SCHNUCK:
Evert Schnuck lived on what was called "Hesselinkslaan." This was an unpaved lane that went from Waterhuizen (where the river Hunze meets the place) to Westerbroek. It was, actually, forbidden to use this lane, because it was at one time private and later it became a nature restort.
But we did go there off and on and no one ever bothered us as long as we respected
the sanctity of nature.
Which we did. (See my biography - Waterhuizen)

Children of EVERT SCHNUCK and HARMKE WERKMAN are:
i. H. T. SCHNUCK, m. G. WIEGMAN.

Notes for BOUWE SCHNUCK:
Oom (uncle) Bouwe lived, also, in Waterhuizen -- four houses away from where I lived.
He and tante (aunt) Catrien didn't care too much for housekeeping and were not the cleanest
people in the place. Tante Catrien never went outside, but oom Bouwe was there all the time.
He was retired (Dutch Soc. Security) and always was outside in the street trying to talk to someone.
While talking he'd stand with hands in his pocket (always the same browm corduroy pants), legs somewhat spread apart and lower lip protruded. Another interesting fact was that uncle Bouwe had a hernia in the pelvic area which they didn't operate on in those days. Instead, to alleveate the problem, he wore a sort of brace under his pants which gave the appearance of a perpetual erection.
But we grew up with it and paid no attention to it.
Once in a while my grandma, who lived two houses away from us (Rijfiena Veenstra, née Mulder)
would visit tante Catrien; so it was on a hot, humid August day that grandma was sitting at the table across from tante Catrien, who was about to make some tea for both of them.
The room was full of buzzing flies, and from the ceiling hung a few of those tacky fliestrips.
One big black/green bug got onto the windows sill and tante Catrien whacked it hard with the wet dish cloth. Then went on to wipe out the two cups with the same cloth and poured the tea for both of them.
Grandma never did drink the tea (see my biography: Waterhuizen)

Notes for DERKJE SCHNUCK:
This was my mother's second sister and we always called her "tante Zus",
which means "aunt sister." To have the nickname "Zus" (sister) is not
that uncommen in the Netherlands. I do know for a fact that she did not
like the name "Derkje" and that's the reason we all called her tante "Zus."
She and her family lived in a place near the town of Groningen, called
Ruischerbrug (incidentially, that's where the Bouwmans also lived).
On one cold, winterday she came in from the outside and once inside she passed
out. Her husband (uncle Harm Maat) found her there soon after and called the
docter, who came over about fifteen minutes later (they made houscalls then).
He told him not to worry and to put her in bed. Uncle did so, but after a few
hours she had not come to and he began to worry and called the docter again.
When the docter arrived he found out his mistake. My aunt had had a massive
stroke (and had not simply passed out). She was dead.

Notes for FREDERIKA JACOBA VORSTENBURG:
Upon naturalization in the USA (Santa Ana, province of Orange on
Jan 7, 1971), she changed the name Frederika to: Fredricka

Children of SIJTSE VEENSTRA and FREDERIKA VORSTENBURG are:
i. JULIETTE HELEN VEENSTRA, b. May 19, 1972, Newport Beach, Orange County, California, USA; m. STEPHEN WALTERS; b. September 26, 1971, Harthill, Yorkshire, England.

Notes for JULIETTE HELEN VEENSTRA:
On May 19, 1972 at 10:45 I was busily working during my prep period. This was
period 4. Period 5 was my French 1 class. I had just put the typed ditto
into the copying machine when Mrs. Phyllis Dietz stormed into the office (by
coincidence, it was Phyllis's birthday). She told me that everyone had been
looking for me, and that she was glad that someone finally had found me. "Your
wife's water broke" she said. And I asked her what that meant. Being a very
able and learned science teacher she gave me the explanation with the result
that I left everything as it was and asked her to get me a substitute teacher
for the remainder of the day.
I arrived home, in Santa Ana, 908 S.Parton S.Street in about 20 minutes. Not
that I drove like an idiot, as one sees on those cartoons; Santa Ana was simply
not all that far away. And as I arrived I noticed that everything was already
well organized in a typical mom's manner. So, no panic, no rush, no headaches.
Just something that had te be done.
We went to Hoag hospital in Newport Beach. The same place where a few years
later John Wayne would spent his last breath (but before he died, he quickly
turned Catholic--just te be on the safe side). Hoag hospital is (maybe when
you read this "was") in Newport Beach. A place full of hoity-toidy nouveau
riches, who'd dress up in tuxedo for a late afternoon barbeque. A good place
to be born and a good place to get the hell out of.
We parked our little orange Datsun in the hospital parking lot and went to the,
I think, second floor where all babies were born -- maternity ward it's called.
Mom was checked, in and I was allowed to go in with her. I was even allowed to
go into the delivery room if, and when, that time would come. We had taken
those "huff-and-puff" classes and had seen all about that great event called
"birth" (it ain't no sunset, believe me). In any case that got me a green-blue
gown, a pair of delivery room loafers and a face mask. That and a free ticket
to the show.
Since her water had "broken", things just didn't go normal. They induced labor
and soon after that the labor(pains) set in. It is not fair for me to describe
these pains, since this is a woman's domain and it is, justly, their right to
proudly belabor (no pun here) the "immense" suffering that goes along with
giving birth to the critter. So ask her.
I soon noticed, however, that things were going faster than they should have.
We had been promised by everyone a long and tortuous road of a minumum of
eight hours. Some women, with great distaste for their offspring in question,
might claim that the little bastard made her whince and whine and scream for
days. We were, therefore, prepared. Just that mom skipped all the preliminary
symptons and went immediately into a stage that promised that the suffering we
had so much been looking forward to, was shortened to a disappointing 15
minutes. I did point this out to the nurse on the floor. Well she was
experienced and let me know that I overreacted. Well, she was a woman and she
was in this business and I knew nothing, so she was probably right.
Then the medicman came in, the one that would do the work in the delivery room,
and he took a peek under the blankets and noticed that the whole kaboodel was
about to pop and figured that it was time to wheel the lady into the delivery
room. Now, I learned in those classes earlier that you got to put on the
sterile garb and I did so in a hurry. The moment I got into the delivery room,
the knowledgable nurse was there next to the stirrups, the doc at the footend
and Fredricka properly under a blanket. All smiles. Figured that this damned
thing'd be over soon. I was astonished and slightly pissed. All that time and
energy spent going to those classes, learning to inhale and exhale. Learning
to understand those moods women go through during labor. All for nought!!
Here she was, smiling away, thinking that that son-of-a-bitch is not going to
see me suffer. Not long after, a few grunts and a big push and the little crown
appeard in the mirror across from me. Followed by a purple kid.
Wich gave one loud scream and was put on mom's belly. The doc told me that it
was a girl and I was thrilled by his comptence to observe that.
Fingers, toes, everything was there, but the color was WOW!! He told me that
that would go away and it made me feel a little better, because white people
don't look like that!
It did go away.
See for yourself.
Julie and her mom stayed in Hoag hospital for five days. Somehow she was the
first born and people, by that time, don't know that those little things are
very tough and strong. So she stayed their the maximum time the insurance
would allow.
She came home the following Wednesday to the house on Ross Street in Santa Ana.
We had, a while back bought a new house which was still under construction and after
six weeks we moved in our new and own place on Marylin Drive in Huntington Beach, California.
Where Juliette continued to grow up for the first two and a half years, playing in her sandbox,
going with Mom to Murdy park. One time on the way back from Murdy Park she had lost her
yellow ducky, but luckely I found it
again. At night she went to bed with Sealy, the blue seal. One night it was
a full moon and it was extremely big, so I showed her the moon and she was
awfully impressed by it. Then, later, came the dog Pogo. He stayed with us
for a little while, but I had to send him back to the pound. He was a terrible
digger. Somehow it did't bother Juliette.
In 1973, in July/August, grandma and granda Veenstra came over from the
Netherlands and stayed with us for about five weeks. They had a great time and
were very fond of their little granddaughter.
In 1974 Juliette asked her mom once in November whether mom could took take off
the lid of her (mom's) belly. She knew that there was a new baby inside and
she wanted to see it.
We moved January 1, 1975 to a bigger house, to Buckeye Circle in Fountain
Valley. California, where we are still living now, August 30, 1997.
And -- Juliette lives now in San Diego.
On January 17, 1975 "the lid came off" and Linda was born.

ii. LINDA GWYNNE VEENSTRA, b. January 17, 1975, Fountain Valley, Orange County, California, USA; m. BRIAN ANDREW WEINBERG; b. December 25, 1976, Long Beach, California, USA.

Notes for LINDA GWYNNE VEENSTRA:
On this 16th of January 1975 it is terribly cold. I am sitting in the living
room of the house we've just bought and Fredricka is walking aimlessly around
the kitchen and the way she acts is as if she's got some sort of nesting urge
which doesn't allow her to park her 8 ½ month pregnant body down for a moment.
Someone rings the doorbell and I'm glad, maybe there'll be a person at the door
who can get her mind away from whatever it is she pondering. As bad luck will
have it, it's the gossiping neighbor woman from two houses down. We haven't talked to
her yet (we've just moved into our new house two weeks ago), but from what I have heard
from other people in the street that was not a big loss. Before you know it, she'll be at your
door and ask you a million questions, which are none of her damned business. She's here.
I get up to properly introduce myself and meet her at the door,
which Fredricka already opened. We ask her in, but she prefers to stay in the
open, drafty and cold doorway and talk. That there's a pregnant woman leaning
against the doorpost is something she does not seem to notice. She fires her
questions as if she were from the IRS and was suspecting us of taxfraud.
She was a small ugly little bitch who claims that she is of German ancestry --
matter of fact her father is German, she says. Poor gossip doesn't know,
seemingly, that being a German doesn't score well with any Dutch, but we let it
go. She rambles and questions on. Fredricka is beginning to pale somewhat,
the temperature on this January evening does attest to the fact that the
weatherman was right when he said that we are having a cold spell--- damned
freezing spell would be better.
The Nazi-offspring gives up after a solid half hour.
Either ran out of questions or out of braincapacity to store the newly gained
information. She gives up being interested and says goodbye. As far as we're
concerned "good riddance." And when the door is closed we both realize that
it's time for the three of us to go out for dinner. The third one is, of
course, the two and a half year old Juliette who has during the Maggie ordeal
shown definitely no interest in the woman and played in her bedroom.

There was an Italian restaurant, on the corner of Beach and Slater in Fountain
Valley in those days. It's still there at the present, but the name changed
several times. It was lousy then and has not improved over the years. We
decided to go over there and have a bite to eat. It was alright. Never been too much
in love with Dego chow, but what the hell, noodles, pasta, whatever. Boil it,
sauce it and serve it. Some idiot will like eventually. Well, I didn't like
it. Juliette seemed to enjoy it well enough, but her mom got kind of nervous
during the meal. And then I got nervous. And then it struck us. That kid was
going to be born two weeks early and it was going to happen tonight!!

After the meal I went into the cold, cold garage (have to rub it in) and put
the finishing touches on the crib, which had belonged to Juliette, but was now
going to be the new baby's. Final touches of yellow paint; we figured that if
we'd paint it another color Juliette would never know this had been hers (so,
we were inexperienced, and naïve!). Finally, at ten I went to bed. Forgotten
about that little nervous forboding in the restaurant. Just thought about that
Kraut neighbor who kept mom standing in the cold doorway and refused to come
in.

Sleep ought to be restful. But at two o'clock the sound in the bathroom wakes
me. Well, when they're that pregnant they have to pee a lot. What else is
new.
"I think my water broke again."
"Again" is the key word here. Same happened with the first one.
But then it happened during the day. Now everyone is asleep and we're new in
this neighborhood, don't know anyone well enough to wake them and ask them to
babysit the firstborn. However, we do have a brother-in-law who is married to a
a sister-in-law who loves Jesus -- they live in Orange and told us to call when
the "time is there." It looked to me that the time was there and for the next
hour I tried to call them out of bed, but no one answered. Finally, out of
desparation I called one of their sons, named Frankie and he and his wife came
over and babysat. Lateron they would take Julie to his sister, where she
stayed for two days, till Sunday, because it was then that mom and the new one
came home. But I'm jumping ahead.
By about 2:30 a.m. the water had broken and by about 4:30 that same a.m. we
were on the way to Fountain Valley Community Hosptial. Where I had taken
classe in breathing, in understanding a laboring woman's suffering, the
huffing, puffing, sweating, coping with those sudden mood changes, learned
about birht and after-birth. Learned how to put on a gown. And learned not
to crack up when you're surrounded by twenty preggies with all sorts of huge
protruding fronts.
And, as with Juliette, all for nothing again!
We entered ten minutes later (lived close to the hospital) and Fredricka was
admitted. She had no labor pain, so we just stayed in her room and talked.
At seven we were still talking. Her adrenaline had put her into an eternal
state of being awake, but I needed some sustance and we mutually agreed that I
should have some breakfast. So I went to the cafeteria, sat there, ate something
unimportant and had some coffee. Back to the room. There I was told that
it might be better were I to come back around nine (testing needed to be done
and all other thing that had nothing to do with huffing and puffing).
So I went to school and saw to my chagrin that my substitue teacher was that
mean red bitch who, also, shall remain nameless.. I hated her, and my students despised
her. Rather than having to confront her, I went to the faculty lounge
instead and talked with my friends and collegeas. Till nine o'clock. By now I
assumed that the medical staff had had enough time with
the-close-to-giving-birth-mohter and that the real expert should be needed.
And I went to the hospital again in my orange Datsun (yes, still the same
Datsun I had when her water broke the first time 2½ years ago). Entering the hosptal I
noticed some familiar faces and then I realize that my Linguistics class,
without an exception was there. Big mouth Marci McHugh told me that there was
no way they were going to take any more insults from the substitute teacherr, that they heard
that I was here with my wife, who was going to have a baby (she had that
right!) and that they (the students) were there to offer me their moral
support.
I thanked them hartlily and told them that I would have to check things out
first and see how things were going.
Things were going fine. Labor had already been induced and the nurse told me
that everything looked fine. She had an air of confidence about her, and I
began to understand why. She had been a midwife in Brittain and was quite well
aware how to handle all kinds of situation that were birth related. Our doctor
was not there today (most likely had someting extremely important
planned between the first and the eighteenth hole on the golf course) and the
doctor in charge of OB was going to assist in the delivery. That sounded good
to me. I was told that I wasn't needed, and I went back to the cafeteria to spend some more
time with my class, which was sitting at a
little white, sterile table drinking pops and eating all kinds of garbage that
ensures all healthy tissue an early destruction.
Just as I had parked myself I was paged and told to go to the room where mom
was still on the inducing bottle. But not anymore. I was told to put on my
garb and go into the delivery room, where she and the midwife-nurse and the
docter were all ready to go. And "go" it did! One push and a crown appeared,
followed by shoulders and the rest. A nice, healthy girl who gave one loud
scream and shut up from that point on. She was cleaned and put on the counter,
later to be wheeled in the nursery. In front of the window, where my
linguistics class all admired her. And she slept through content
with the new environment. Which reminds me of those people who say that birth
is rather traumatic. Not by looking at this birth! Kid came out, wailed once,
looked pissed off, closed her eyes and slept very contently for quite a while.
Well, I had the rest of the day off.
And so it was, January 17, 1975.
Linda Gwynne came home two days later. Came to her yellow room and her yellow
crib on 16768 Buckeye Cricle in Fountain Valley, CA 92708. We put her in her
little crib right after we had come home and had some coffee while she slept
contently.
First impressions I had of her was that she was excactly like my gandmother
Rijfiena Filipstina Veenstra-Mulder. I had this impression right in the
delivery room after I saw her for the first time. Rijfiena was my
grandmother on my father's side. She lived two houses from us when I still
lived in Waterhuizen, the Netherlands. When Linda was born, grandmother had
already died.
